Frequently Asked Questions

Waitlist

  • We’re not able to provide exact waitlist positions, as placements can change frequently. However, feel free to contact us and we’ll do our best to provide helpful information about your current status.

  • To keep the waitlist accurate and up to date, we regularly remove students who may no longer need housing. This helps ensure that available spots go to those who are still actively seeking on-campus housing.

If you still need housing, you’re welcome to rejoin the waitlist at any time.

  • If you missed your waitlist offer, you can add yourself back to the waitlist. You’ll be placed in the same position as before, but please note that the same bedspace may no longer be available.

Finding a Bedspace

  • To request a different bedspace, log into your housing application and select your desired agreement period. Available bedspaces will appear green, and you’re welcome to select any of them.

If a bedspace appears orange, it means the current tenant may be open to swapping (see more about bedspace swaps below).

Once the agreement period has started, any bedspace change must be approved by a Hall Advisor.
If there are no spaces available, add yourself to the waitlist.

  • To update your Bedspace Swap Preferences:

    1. Go to the "Account" tab in your housing application.
    2. Click "See Current Agreement" under the correct agreement.
    3. Choose one of the following options:

      • Not swappable
      • Swappable within your same building only
      • Swappable within your same housing area only
      • Swappable with any bedspace in On-Campus Housing
    4. Click "Save My Preferences" to finalize your choice.

To request a Bedspace Swap or Move:

    1. Return to your housing application and select the term/semester.
    2. Click "Continue" to begin the contract process.
    3. Follow the steps to select your preferred building, floor, and room.

      • Green = available bedspaces
      • Orange = swappable bedspaces
    4. Choose "Request Move" for green or "Request Swap" for orange bedspaces.
    5. Complete the required steps (meal plan, policy agreement, etc.) and confirm your request.

  • If you’re in your first two semesters at BYU as a single undergraduate student, you’re required to live in one of the following:

    1. BYU On-Campus Housing
    2. BYU Off-Campus Contracted Housing
    3. With qualifying family members
Note: If you plan to live with qualifying family members, you’ll need to submit documentation to confirm eligibility.

If you don’t have on-campus housing, you can search for approved options here:

If you’d like to live somewhere else, you must submit a petition for an exception. This option is only available to students in their first two semesters.
    Submit a Petition

  • If you are going to be starting your first semester at BYU as an undergraduate, your priority is based on when your BYU admissions application was submitted. Otherwise, for returning students/residents your priority/position is based on when you submit your housing application.

  • While we don’t control how many students are admitted to the university each year, we continually review and adjust our housing allocations to better meet the needs of students.

Our team works hard to maximize available space and ensure a fair and supportive housing experience for as many students as possible.

  • You can apply for housing through the BYU Housing Application as soon as possible. If no bedspaces are currently available, you’ll have the option to join the waitlist for Winter housing.

We recommend applying early to increase your chances of securing a spot.

Living On-Campus

  • Housing payments are not monthly rent but rather installments of the total contract cost. The full cost of the Fall/Winter agreement is divided into 10 payments, each covering a portion of the overall period.

Although housing doesn’t begin until later, the first payment is due July 1st to start spreading out the total cost early and evenly across the year.

  • Spring and Summer:

    Early check-in is not available.

    Fall and Winter:

Early check-in may be possible, but you’ll need to contact the housing area directly to make a request and check availability.

  • If you're living in on-campus housing and plan to bring a car, you'll need to register your vehicle and request a parking permit.

Parking availability varies by housing area.
